Gov. Abiodun Orders MKO Abiola’s House Renovation for June 12

Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has directed the Ministry of Housing to immediately give a face-lift to the house of late MKO Abiola, at Gbagura, Oja Agbo Abeokuta, in preparation for Democracy Day on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, before leaving office declared June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria, as against May 29, to celebrate the sacrifices made by Abiola in the quest for restoration of democratic government in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Lekan Adeniran, and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Governor wants the family house of the late Aareona Kakanfo of Yoruba land to be befitting and conducive for many pro-democracies activists who would be visiting for the celebration.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of the Abiola’s family, Alhaji Tajudeen Abiola, has expressed gratitude to the State Government for the gesture , which he said would not only bring changes to the Abiola family house alone but to the community as the collapse external drainage system were also touched.

“We are grateful to the State Governor for this kind gesture. The fallen ceilings were replaced, the windows were touched and the old buildings are wearing new looks,” he said. On his part, the son of the late business mogul, Ameen Abiola said the family was greatful for the generous disposition of the State Government aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the legacy and ideals of their late father. According to him, the family would always be grateful for the various efforts aimed at bringing alive the memory of their late father

Abiola, a business mogul and philanthropist, was believed to have won the June 12 presidential election in 1993, which was annulled by the then Military President, Ibrahim Babangida. He later declared himself as president and consequently arrested.

He eventually died in detention on July 7, 1998, in very controversial circumstances.

Police arrest suspected hoodlums, recover firearms in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has intensified its fight against criminal activities, leading to the arrest of two suspected hoodlums during an intelligence-led operation in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the operation by the Command’s Crack Squad at Amanekwula Village, followed reports of sporadic gunshots by suspected criminals.

Ukandu explained that on sighting the police team, the suspects attempted to escape into a nearby bushes but were swiftly apprehended.

The suspects were identified as Chigbo Eze and Igbele Osinachi, both males.

Items recovered from them include one locally-made pistol and fourteen (14) rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

He added that the suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue to track down other members of the criminal gang, after which the arrested suspects will be charged to court.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, reiterated the Command’s determination to sustain its onslaught against crime and criminality in the state.

She urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue to provide the police with timely and credible information to enhance public safety across Ebonyi State.

Police arrest trigger-happy cop over road shooting in Delta

The Police Command in Delta has confirmed the arrest of a police officer who was caught on a viral video shooting at a moving car last Friday in Asaba.

The command spokesperson, Mr. Bright Edafe (SP) said in a statement in Asaba on Wednesday that the command is aware of the viral video of a policeman who shot at a moving vehicle in Asaba.

He said: “After a careful examination of the video clip, it is clear that the policemen acted in an unprofessional manner, unbecoming of a police officer.

“The Command condemns his act in totality as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237.

“It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property and not to put the life of anybody in danger.”

Edafe said the erring officer has been identified, summoned and detained at the command headquarters.

According to him, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda has directed that internal disciplinary action be initiated against the officer.

The command spokesperson further added that at the end, the officer has been taken into custody, queried, and an investigation into his conduct has since commenced.

He noted that although the policeman was responding to a case of a hit-and-run accident, but however, reiterated that no policeman is allowed to use his firearm without justification, as stipulated in Force Order 237.

“The CP assures members of the public that the officer concerned will be dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” Edafe said.

Alleged planned attack: Kogi govt. sues for calm

The Kogi Government on Wednesday urged its residents not to panic but to remain calm and vigilant over alleged planned terrorist attack in parts of the state and Ondo state.

Mr Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi Commissioner for Information gave the assurance in a statement in Lokoja.

Fanwo said that Kogi is in possession of an intelligence report about the attack, which he said, is a step toward victory.

“Our possession of the intelligence report is a demonstration of the proactive work of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies in protecting Kogi residents from criminal elements.

“The report itself is evidence that our security agencies are alive to their responsibilities.

“We commend the DSS for their vigilance and for providing early intelligence capable of preventing such evil plans from being executed.

“This government, hereby, assure residents that it’s working closely with the DSS, Nigerian Army, Police, and other relevant security formations to ensure that any terrorist attempt is completely foiled before it can threaten lives or property, ” he stated.

According to him, Gov. Ahmed Ododo has made security of lives and property in Kogi a top priority of his administration.

Fanwo said that strategic security measures had been reinforced across the state, and surveillance had been intensified, especially around border communities.

He urged residents to go about their normal businesses without fear but to remain security-conscious and report any suspicious movement or persons to the nearest security agency.

“The government will protect the people at all costs. We will not allow criminals or terror groups to disrupt the peace and progress we have built.

“Kogi remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, and we intend to keep it that way.”
