Kebbi State Approves Over ₦1.8 Billion to Settle Retiree, Death Benefits
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has authorised the release of more than 1.8 billion Naira to settle outstanding gratuities, death benefits, and other entitlements owed to retirees and families of deceased civil servants.
According to a statement from the State Head of Service, Malami Shekare, the disbursement was carried out in two phases between March and September 2025. The first phase saw ₦933.03 million distributed to 404 beneficiaries, while the second phase allocated ₦932.95 million to 443 others.
The beneficiaries include retired staff from the State Civil Service, Local Government Councils, and Education Authorities, as well as contract staff and dependants of deceased workers.
This move addresses a critical issue across Nigeria, where many retirees face prolonged delays in accessing their benefits due to fiscal challenges. Kebbi State has been contending with significant inherited liabilities spanning several years.
Governor Idris, who took office in 2023, has consistently highlighted workers’ welfare as a key focus of his administration. His Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, stated the payment is part of a continued effort to clear accumulated arrears and fulfil the governor’s promise to “restore dignity to retirees and support families who lost breadwinners.”
The release of these funds is expected to provide crucial financial relief to beneficiaries amidst rising living costs, often aiding with expenses like healthcare and education. Observers note that settling such arrears can also improve public service morale and labour relations.
