Lookman’s Positive Debut Overshadowed by Atlético’s Shock Home Defeat to Betis
A first-half strike from Real Betis’s Antony was enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday, ending the hosts’ unbeaten La Liga run at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Making his first league appearance at the venue, Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman maintained a positive outlook despite the defeat. “Not the result we wanted, but we stay positive. Very special moment making my debut in the Metropolitano,” the Super Eagles star posted on social media after the match.
The visitors exacted revenge for a heavy Copa del Rey loss to Atlético just days earlier, with Antony’s 28th-minute long-range effort proving the difference. Atlético thought they had equalized twice, but both efforts were ruled out. Lookman had a goal disallowed for offside before halftime, and a second-half Diego Llorente own goal was also chalked off following a VAR review that found Antoine Griezmann offside in the build-up.
Lookman, a constant threat to the Betis defense, was involved in much of Atlético’s attacking play before his substitution in the 70th minute. His withdrawal prompted a notable reaction from the club’s Director of Men’s Football, Mateu Alemany, whose apparent displeasure was captured on camera and later circulated online.
The defeat leaves Diego Simeone’s side in third place with 45 points. Betis, meanwhile, climb to fifth with 38 points. Atlético now turn their focus to a Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg clash against Barcelona on Thursday.
