Man Allegedly Sets Mother Ablaze in Cross River Following Witchcraft Accusation Over Grandchild’s Death

A man in Cross River State is being sought by police after allegedly attacking his mother and setting her on fire, accusing her of using witchcraft to kill his infant daughter.

The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Etim, is said to have carried out the attack on his mother, Mrs Atim Eyo, on Friday, August 14, 2026, in the Ojuah community of Akamkpa Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that Etim’s daughter died earlier that day, and he subsequently travelled to his mother’s home carrying fuel and a lighter. Once there, he reportedly accused her of being behind the child’s death and confronted her over it. A witness at the scene said the confrontation turned physical when Etim tried to strangle his mother before she managed to break away. As she attempted to escape, he allegedly doused her with the fuel and set her alight.

Neighbours who saw what was happening moved quickly to put out the flames and got the injured woman to a hospital for treatment.

The Cross River Police Command has confirmed the incident took place. Command spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah told reporters in Calabar that officers are actively working to locate and arrest Etim, who remains on the run, so he can respond to the allegations. He added that more details would be released to the public once the suspect is caught and investigations are completed.
