Naira Scarcity: Bank Workers Threaten Strike Over Attacks

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), a bank workers union, has threatened to withdraw the services of its members nationwide, following attacks on some commercial bank premises.

The threat was made in a statement by NUBIFIE’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sheikh.

Sheikh expressed dismay over recent attacks on bank workers without proper protection by security agencies and said members of the association would be left no choice but to suspend operations until the attacks on its workers are addressed and security ensured.

He, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other stakeholders to end the hardship brought upon Nigerians as a result of the change of cash policy.

He also asked Nigerians, who were unable to access their funds deposited in banks, to bear with the situation.

“We, therefore, call on the Central Bank of Nigeria to review the cash withdrawal policy which has affected the businesses of over 200,000 Point of Sales businesses in Nigeria,” Sheikh said.
