The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians to prioritize their health and safety during the holiday season by making conscious, drug-free choices.

In a Christmas message posted on its X page on Thursday, the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), extended warm wishes to the public and commended NDLEA officers for their tireless efforts in protecting communities from the scourge of drug abuse.

“Your dedication and sacrifice in protecting our communities from drug abuse are deeply appreciated,” Marwa said, acknowledging the crucial role played by NDLEA personnel in curbing the menace of illicit substances.

The agency’s chairman emphasized the importance of public vigilance and personal responsibility in reducing drug-related harm, particularly during the festive period when social gatherings and celebrations can increase exposure to substance abuse.

Marwa urged Nigerians to take advantage of the holiday season to make healthy decisions, free from the influence of drugs, saying, “Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria.” He concluded by wishing everyone a peaceful, joyous, and drug-free Christmas, underscoring the agency’s commitment to promoting community wellbeing.

The NDLEA’s appeal comes against a concerning backdrop of drug use trends in Nigeria. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) World Drug Report 2025, the national prevalence of drug use stands at 14.4%, nearly three times the global average, affecting an estimated 14.3 million people aged 15-64.

The report highlights the urgent need for collective action to address the country’s growing substance abuse problem.

As Nigerians gather with loved ones to celebrate the holiday season, the NDLEA’s message serves as a timely reminder of the importance of prioritizing health, safety, and responsible choices.

By working together, Nigerians can create a safer, healthier environment for all, and build a brighter future for generations to come.
