Niger Miners: Tinubu Orders Transparent Probe Into Custody Deaths

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a full and transparent investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State.

The deaths followed enforcement operations around Lt. Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna.

Tinubu said every Nigerian life matters and no citizen should die in government custody due to negligence, abuse or dereliction of duty. He directed investigators to examine circumstances of arrest, detainees’ condition on arrival, detention conditions, number held, medical attention provided and events leading to deaths.

The President warned that suspension of officers is only administrative and must not replace determination of criminal responsibility.

He directed the Ministry of Interior and NSCDC leadership to cooperate fully with investigators, saying any official found culpable must be arrested and prosecuted.

Tinubu condoled families of the deceased and appealed for calm, saying anti-illegal mining operations must respect rights and dignity. “The sanctity of human life is non-negotiable,” he said
