Nigeria Labour Congress Plans Nationwide Protest on December 17 Over Rising Insecurity.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on December 17 to draw attention to the country’s worsening insecurity and demand urgent action from stakeholders. NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated this in Gombe on Saturday, emphasizing that the situation affects every Nigerian, regardless of status or occupation.
Ajaero highlighted the damaging impact of insecurity on the economy, citing the kidnapping of workers and students, including children of workers, and the killing of a teacher in Kebbi. He urged the government to take decisive action against insecurity, stressing that it is alien to Nigeria’s culture and must be collectively condemned.
The NLC president emphasized that the protest aims to reassure authorities of public support in confronting insecurity, saying, “Government should know their hands are being strengthened to do the needful because Nigerians are saying this is wrong and must stop.” He called for collective action, noting that kidnapping for ransom undermines national values and social cohesion.
Ajaero also urged the government to expand social safety nets, saying the minimum wage alone cannot ease hardship without supportive incentives. He emphasized that workers suffer severely, as kidnapped persons often lack ransom money and resort to borrowing or begging to survive. The NLC plans to mobilize workers to join the protest, saying it is their only voice to Nigerians and the international community.
