Nigeria Secures Release of Detained Soldiers and Aircraft from Burkina Faso

In a significant development, Burkina Faso authorities have released 11 Nigerian soldiers and a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, 10 days after they were detained following an emergency landing in the Sahel country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed the news to News Media on Wednesday night, stating that the soldiers’ release had been secured.

According to Ebienfa, the Head of Mission in Burkina Faso had verified the release. However, the travel arrangements for the soldiers and the aircraft remain unclear. The military personnel were detained by Burkina Faso’s authorities after their Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft made an unscheduled landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8 due to a technical issue. The plane was en route to Portugal from Lagos when it encountered the problem.

Initially, Burkina Faso authorities held the aircraft and its crew over alleged airspace violations, describing the incident as a breach of sovereignty. Following investigations, it was concluded that the aircraft lacked prior authorization to enter Burkinabe airspace.

The Nigerian government had been working tirelessly to secure the release of its detained soldiers. President Bola Tinubu dispatched a Special Envoy to Ouagadougou to engage with Burkinabe authorities and facilitate the release of the personnel. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, was confirmed to be in Ouagadougou as the President’s Special Envoy earlier on Wednesday.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Burkina Faso had also been engaging with the host government, alongside the high-level intervention authorized by the President. The Nigerian Air Force had assured that the crew remained safe and were treated courteously during their detention, emphasizing that the precautionary landing was conducted in line with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols.

The House of Representatives had raised concerns over the continued detention of the soldiers and urged diplomatic efforts to secure their release. With the soldiers now released, it is expected that they will return to Nigeria soon, although the exact timeline remains uncertain.

The incident highlights the importance of diplomatic engagement and cooperation between nations in resolving such issues. The Nigerian government’s efforts to secure the release of its soldiers demonstrate its commitment to protecting its citizens and maintaining good relations with other countries.
