Obi Blames Economy For Nigerians Visa Difficulties

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has attributed the difficulty many Nigerians face in obtaining foreign visas to the country’s economic condition.

Obi made the remark on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he argued that wealthy countries were reluctant to open their doors to people from poorer nations.

“No rich man will open their door for poor people, that’s why many countries are denying Nigerian visas,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor said he believed the situation would change if Nigeria underwent the economic reforms he proposed.

Obi said Nigerians would have less reason to seek opportunities abroad if the country became more prosperous and offered better economic prospects at home.

“By the time we are done reforming Nigeria, Nigerians won’t like to be travelling outside like now. Even when they apply for a visa, they can easily get it,” he said.

The statement comes as political parties and presidential candidates begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Obi is currently the presidential candidate of the NDC, with former Kano State governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso as his running mate.

The pair moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC in May, citing internal disagreements and legal disputes within the party.
