Obi Criticizes Tinubu Over Persistent National Grid Collapses
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has publicly questioned President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to his campaign pledge on stable electricity, citing repeated national grid failures.
In a post on his X account on Wednesday, Obi highlighted that Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed twice already in January 2026, following approximately twelve failures in 2025.
He directly referenced a promise made by Tinubu during the 2022 campaign, in which the President stated, “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”
“This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor also contrasted Nigeria’s power situation with that of Turkey, where President Tinubu is currently on an official visit. Obi noted that Turkey, with about 87 million people, generates over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria with a population three times larger struggles with a fraction of that capacity.
“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi added, urging a focus on solving domestic issues.
He further called on Nigerians to prioritize demanding accountability and responsible governance over electioneering.
This criticism comes as Hamattan News reports another national grid collapse occurred on Tuesday, the second such system failure within the first month of 2026, causing widespread blackouts across the country.
