Olusegun Mimiko Advocates Power Devolution to Address Nigeria’s Governance Challenges

Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has asserted that the excessive centralization of power at the center is fueling Nigeria’s persistent problems, calling for power devolution as a lasting solution.

Speaking on the topic “The Government and Politics Mountain” during the Pastors’ Seed Event at the 74th Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mimiko cited the biblical “Jethro Principle” to emphasize that effective governance requires delegating authority and resources to lower levels of government. He argued that a highly centralized system is inefficient for a diverse country like Nigeria and urged for sub-national governments to be empowered to tackle local issues.

While acknowledging current decentralization efforts by the administration, Mimiko maintained that deeper structural reforms are necessary to resolve systemic issues such as insecurity, poverty, and ethnic tensions. Furthermore, he encouraged citizens and Christians of all faiths to engage actively in politics and civic duties to drive national renewal.
