Osun Polytechnic Student Killed During NANS Convention in Osogbo
A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, identified as Ademiju Ayeni of the Estate Management Department, has died after sustaining a stab wound during the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee convention in Osogbo, Osun State.
Sources familiar with the incident said the tragedy occurred on Saturday during the students’ gathering. Witnesses alleged that Ayeni was stabbed following an altercation near the convention venue.
According to information gathered, the injured student was rushed to a private hospital in Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead. His remains were later deposited at the morgue of the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police.
Confirming the development, the Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said a disagreement had occurred earlier during the convention but was resolved before participants dispersed.
He explained that Ayeni later complained of chest pain, and upon examination, a stab wound was discovered on his chest. He was taken to a hospital but did not survive.
Ojelabi added that an autopsy would be conducted to determine further details surrounding the death. He, however, did not confirm whether any suspect had been arrested.
Meanwhile, NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, described the incident as unfortunate and said preliminary reports suggested it may have been linked to a clash involving rival groups outside the convention venue.
Authorities have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
