PDP Planned National Convention Not Vitiated by Court- Ologunagba
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the judgment delivered on Friday by a Federal High Court in Abuja stopping on its forthcoming convention as an ‘assault on Nigeria’s democratic process’.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, maintained that the court order would not stop its planned national convention.
Ologunagba said that the party was appalled by the judgment delivered by the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, in a suit challenging the legality of the party’s processes leading to its planned Nov. 15 convention in Ibadan.
The full statement;
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja, presided over by Honorable Justice Kolawole Omotosho today, describing it as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.
However, the PDP states that the judgment of the court does not vitiate its ability to proceed with the processes and activities towards the National Convention to elect new National Officers to pilot the affairs of the Party for the next four years.
“Our Party notes the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which affirms the supremacy of a political party in the management of its internal affairs.
“The PDP therefore charges its members, Chapter and Organs to remain steadfast and focused on preparations towards the holding of the National Convention of our Party
“Nevertheless, the PDP as the leading opposition Party in Nigeria committed to the Rule of Law has accordingly directed its lawyers to take immediate action to appeal this judgment in our unwavering determination to uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country.”

Alleged anti-party: PDP suspends Anyanwu, Ajibade, organising secretary
The National Working Committee (NWC) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, for one month over alleged anti-party activities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, National Organising Secretary, Umaru Bature, and Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, were also suspended for the same alleged offence.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, announced the suspension of the top national officers while addressing newsmen after the emergency meeting of the NWC on Saturday in Abuja.
NAN reports that the suspension was coming barely 24 hours after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the suspension of the party’s national convention scheduled for Nov. 15 to Nov. 16 in Ibadan.
Ologunagba said that the suspension was in pursuant to the provisions of Sections 58 and 59 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
He said that the national officers were suspended for a period of one month and referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further action.
Ologunagba said that the NWC met and reviewed the party’s activities, particularly the recent development, including party members involving in anti-party activities.
He recalled that the party had, on Aug. 8, issued reprimands to members over anti-party activities which were spelt out in Section 58 of the PDP Constitution.
Ologunagba said that the section specifically refers to ‘anybody who commits any breach of the party’s constitution, any member who says or does anything likely to bring the party into disrepute, hatred or contempt, disobeys or neglects to carry out lawful directives, of the party, or any organ, or officer of the party’.
He said that the section specifically emphasised on ‘any member who engages in any conduct likely to cause disaffection among members of the party, or is likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful and efficient conduct of the business of the party’.
“So, the NWC considered this, with other actions, in line with the constitution of the party and came to these following decision:
“One, the National Legal Adviser, Ajibade suspended for 30 days, and is referred to the national disciplinary committee of the party.
“Two, the Deputy National Legal Adviser, Osuoha, was suspended for 30 days, in line with the constitution, and referred to the National Disciplinary Committee, as may be necessary.
“Three, the National Organising Secretary, Bature, suspended for one month, and referred to the national disciplinary committee.
Third, the National Secretary, Anyanwu, suspended for one month, and referred to the national disciplinary committee,” he said.
Ologunagba said that during the period of the suspension, the affected officers would cease to function in their respective capacities.
“In the case of the national secretary, Pursuant to Section 36(2) of the PDP Constitution, the Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo shall act as the national secretary.
“In the case of the national legal adviser and the deputy national legal adviser, the national director of legal services was directed to oversee the activities of the department,” he said.
Asked why the suspended members were not at the NWC meeting, Ologunagba said that the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, who was present at the meeting, had the constitutional power to summon the NWC meeting.
“This is an emergency meeting and under Section 29 of the constitution of the party, the chairman conveys the meeting.
“The meeting was properly called, and then people are here, and that decision has been taken,” he said.
Ologunagba restated that the party would continue with its scheduled national convention in spite the Friday court verdict.
“We’re a party that respects the rule of law. We will always obey court orders. We have done that in the past.
“However, the court didn’t say the party should stop existing. The process of the party will continue. So, that is what we communicated.
“We are disappointed with the judgment. However, as a party, we will continue our processes,” he said. (NAN)

Court restrains INEC from monitoring, recognising PDP planned national convention
The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the forthcoming peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s national convention.
Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment, held that the PDP failed to comply with relevant conditions and laws for the conduct of the convention.
Justice Omotosho, who challenged the legality of the convention, held that evidence from the electoral umpire and some of the respondents showed that congresses were not held in some states of the federation in breach of the law.
The judge equally held that the signing of notices and correspondence of the PDP by its national chairman without the national secretary, violated the law and consequently made such notices and correspondences a nullity.
Besides, he held that the PDP failed to issue the mandatory 21 days notice of meetings and congresses to enable INEC carry out its mandatory duty of monitoring such meetings and congresses.
Justice Omotosho held that the failure of the PDP to comply with the law had put the planned convention in jeopardy, and subsequently advised the PDP to do the needful before going ahead with the election.
The judge, therefore, restrained INEC from monitoring, receiving, publishing or recognising the outcome of the convention slated for Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, until the law had been complied with.(NAN)

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung dumps PDP for APC in Kaduna
The Sensor representing Southern Senatorial district, Mr Sunday Marshall Katung will on Saturday, November 1, 2025, officially defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The official defection will signal the end of 25 years of the zone’s loyalty to the main opposition party in the area.
Newspot gathered that Katung’s decision followed weeks of intensive consultations with key APC figures in Kaduna and Abuja, including Governor Uba Sani and members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inner circle.
It is no longer about party labels but aligning with the new political reality in Kaduna State, analysts say.
Barely about two weeks ago, the Senator had dismissed reports of his defection as mere speculation, insisting that he remained a committed PDP member, while his media office at the time urged the public to disregard “unfounded rumours” and described them as distractions from his legislative duties.
