Police Arrest Four, Neutralize Suspect in Benin Market Kidnapping Case
The Edo State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation of the June 14 kidnapping incident at the Vegetable Market located off Airport Road in Benin City.
In a statement released on Tuesday, police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that operatives have arrested four suspects and neutralized one individual following a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations. The crackdown began after detectives tracked the criminal network across Benin City and into neighboring Delta State.
The operation commenced on June 18, when police confronted a suspect identified as Marvelous Isaac during a gun duel. During the encounter, another suspect known as “Precious” was killed by security forces. Further investigative work on June 20 led to the arrest of three additional suspects: Gift Raphael, Wisdom Michael, and Rufus Michael.
Authorities recovered several items linked to the crime, including a red Lexus RX 350 SUV, which police stated was used during the abduction. Officers also seized a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle, and ₦2,050,000 in cash. All four suspects currently in custody have reportedly provided statements linking them to the market abduction and other criminal activities within the state.
The Commissioner of Police for Edo State, Monday Agbonika, commended the tactical team for their professionalism and commitment to dismantling the syndicate. He reaffirmed the command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements and urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to law enforcement agencies.
The incident gained public attention after witnesses reported that gunmen abducted a woman who was shopping with her husband and children at the popular market. Viral footage of the event surfaced shortly after, documenting the shock of bystanders who witnessed the abduction.
