Rainstorm Destroys Homes, Displaces Residents in Are-Ekiti
A heavy rainstorm swept through Are-Ekiti on Sunday evening, leaving many residents homeless and causing extensive damage to buildings and property in the community.
The downpour, which lasted several hours into the night, was accompanied by strong winds that ripped off rooftops and caused structural damage to numerous houses. Local residents described the rainfall as unusually heavy and prolonged.
According to eyewitness accounts, several buildings either partially collapsed or were completely destroyed as floodwaters surged through parts of the town, washing away household belongings.
Many families have been displaced as a result of the disaster. Some are currently staying with relatives or neighbours, while others remain without access to basic necessities or immediate assistance.
Community members have raised concerns about the risk of health challenges, especially for children and the elderly, who may be exposed to harsh conditions due to lack of adequate shelter.
Victims of the storm are appealing to the Ekiti State Government and Governor Biodun Oyebanji to intervene swiftly. They have called on the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency to assess the extent of the damage and provide relief materials, including temporary shelter, food, and medical support.
Community leaders in the area have also urged the government to assist with rehabilitation efforts and help rebuild damaged infrastructure.
As residents continue to assess the scale of the destruction, there are growing calls for both immediate relief and long-term measures to protect lives and property from future disasters.
