Six Killed, 23 Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Truck Crash
A fatal accident involving a truck carrying both passengers and livestock claimed six lives and left 23 others injured on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
The crash occurred near Foursquare Camp around 11:27 a.m. and also resulted in the death of 29 cows. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the DAF CF 380 truck, with registration number SNA 287 XA, was involved in a lone accident.
FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole attributed the cause to driver fatigue and excessive speed. The truck, traveling from the northern part of the country to Lagos, was carrying approximately 35 cows along with passenger a practice strongly discouraged by the safety agency.
“This was a case of mixed loading of cattle and passengers. FRSC discourages this practice because there is no segregation between goods and humans. In the event of a crash, it is difficult to separate humans from goods, which may eventually lead to loss of lives,” Odunsi-Oyewole stated.
Rescue teams from the FRSC Ogunmakin Unit arrived at the scene within two minutes of being alerted. The injured and the deceased were transported to Oreoluwa Hospital at GOFAMINT Camp in Ogunmakin and Victory Hospital in Ogere.
The FRSC has urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle drivers, to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, observe speed limits, and avoid driving while fatigued. An investigation into the precise causes of the crash is ongoing.
