Tensions Rise in Kwara APC as Aspirants Threaten Mass Defection

Tensions are escalating within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as uncertainty surrounding the party’s internal arrangements continues to fuel discontent among aspirants seeking elective offices.

The growing frustration comes amid allegations that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has failed to provide clear direction and leadership ahead of the party’s primary elections.

In a related development, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, has officially declared his intention to contest the Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

According to party sources, several aspirants who have already purchased nomination forms are now considering defecting en masse to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The potential defections are driven by frustration over the governor’s alleged lack of clarity on the party’s position regarding primaries.

One aggrieved party member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there is no guidance from the leadership, leaving many to speculate. He added that the issue of multiple nomination forms has worsened matters, with many aspirants already weighing their options.

Another source noted that the problem goes beyond nomination forms, describing it as a crisis of trust. The source said when a leader appears to play multiple sides, the entire structure becomes destabilised, which is why many aspirants are already opening talks with the ADC.

Efforts to reach the APC Kwara State Publicity Secretary were unsuccessful, as he declined to comment, stating he was in a meeting.

Meanwhile, the governor has reportedly travelled to France amid worsening insecurity and renewed bandit attacks across several communities in the state. Sources accused him of prioritising political interests over the safety and welfare of citizens.

According to multiple sources, the governor hurriedly travelled to Europe in an attempt to secure political advantage and presidential backing ahead of the 2027 general elections. He allegedly made unsuccessful efforts to secure a place on the President’s official delegation, including lobbying influential figures within the President’s inner political circle.

After failing to secure a spot on the presidential entourage, the governor allegedly travelled independently to France to pursue private political meetings connected to succession plans in Kwara State.

A presidency source claimed the governor’s mission was aimed at obtaining the President’s support to handpick his successor and maintain political control in the state after the end of his tenure.
