Two Residents Rescued Alive After Building Collapses in Abuja

Two residents have been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed one-storey building in Kubwa, Abuja, after a sudden structural failure trapped them inside the residential property.

The incident occurred on Friday in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, leaving residents and emergency responders scrambling to rescue those trapped beneath the debris.

The two victims were initially trapped on the ground floor after the right section of the building suddenly collapsed.

Fortunately, the other occupants of the property were reportedly away when the incident occurred, helping to prevent what could have been a far more devastating tragedy.

The rescue operation was confirmed by Nkechi Isa, Head of Media and Public Relations at the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD).

According to Isa, the agency received a distress call and immediately mobilised emergency personnel to the scene.

Rescuers eventually succeeded in reaching the trapped residents and extracting both of them alive from the wreckage.

The victims were subsequently taken to Kubwa General Hospital, where they are receiving medical attention and were said to be in stable condition.

Isa disclosed that although no fatalities were recorded, the collapse caused substantial damage to the residents’ belongings and household property.

The affected structure comprises six blocks of flats, according to the emergency management department.

Following the rescue operation, officials from the Department of Development Control and the FCT Police Command also arrived at the scene.

Their intervention was aimed at securing the area, assessing the structural damage and beginning investigations into what caused the building to fail.

The incident has once again placed the spotlight on building safety and structural integrity in Abuja, where the collapse of residential structures can quickly turn into mass-casualty emergencies.

For the two residents pulled from the rubble, however, Friday’s incident ended with a narrow escape.

They went into the building as ordinary residents and emerged from beneath its ruins alive, a reminder of just how quickly a seemingly normal day can turn into a fight for survival.
