University of Benin Launches ₦100bn Development Fund for Infrastructure and Research
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has officially launched a ₦100bn Trust Development Fund aimed at revitalizing the institution’s infrastructure, enhancing teaching standards, and expanding its research capabilities. The fundraising initiative seeks to bridge the gap between government funding and the growing demands of modern higher education.
During the launch event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, commended the university’s move, noting that it aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s broader goals to reposition the sector through innovation and strategic partnerships.
Represented by Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Science and Technology, the minister emphasized that investments in such initiatives are essential for building institutions that are globally competitive and financially resilient.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, served as the chief host and highlighted the necessity of public-private partnerships in sustaining higher education. He noted that as student enrollment grows, the government alone can no longer shoulder the financial burden of maintenance and development.
Similarly, former Minister of Works and UNIBEN alumnus, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), urged fellow alumni and corporate stakeholders to support the project, describing it as a vital contribution to preserving the legacy of the university’s founders.
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chairman of the Trust Development Fund, explained that the initiative is designed to be a sustainable pathway for institutional transformation. He assured stakeholders that the fund would be managed with rigorous transparency, integrity, and accountability.
UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Omoregie Edoba (SAN), stated that the fund is a strategic response to the pressure of increased student populations and the need for rapid technological advancement.
According to the university leadership, the resources will be directed toward modernizing learning facilities, fostering entrepreneurship, and enriching the overall student experience to place the university on a higher pedestal within the global academic community.
