US Set to Sign Landmark 30-Year Civilian Nuclear Pact with Saudi Arabia

The United States is finalizing a landmark 30-year bilateral agreement with Saudi Arabia to assist in establishing a civilian nuclear energy program within the kingdom.

The pact includes provisions that could enable American firms to develop nuclear infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, potentially including uranium enrichment capabilities, bringing substantial investment to the US nuclear sector.

The proposed agreement has raised concerns among US lawmakers from both major parties and Israeli officials, who warn that establishing enrichment facilities could present nuclear proliferation risks in the region. Addressing those concerns, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that any agreement finalized by Washington would maintain strict non-proliferation standards.

While the Trump administration plans to submit the accord to Congress for review, congressional approval is not legally required for the bilateral agreement to take effect.

The nuclear agreement comes amid broader strategic efforts to foster regional diplomatic normalization and security arrangements in the Gulf region. However, the initiative coincides with heightened regional tensions, including ongoing conflict with Iran and recent threats by Yemen-based Houthi rebels targeting Gulf maritime routes and infrastructure.
