WAEC Faces Threatened Legal Action Over Disputed 2026 CB-WASSCE Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing potential legal action over alleged technical glitches and result inconsistencies in the recently released 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE).

An educational advocacy group, the Initiative for School Excellence and Education Foundation, issued a formal 14-day ultimatum to the examination body demanding the preservation of all examination data, full disclosure of technical logs, and the establishment of an independent verification system for candidates to challenge their scores.

The demand, submitted through legal counsel, follows a surge in complaints from candidates alleging discrepancies in automated scoring, data recording, and result generation during the computer-based test. While the foundation noted it was not suggesting every released result is inaccurate, it argued that the volume of reports warrants an objective review to protect the integrity of national assessments.

Key demands outlined in the pre-action notice include candidate access to raw electronic examination logs, transparency surrounding system interruptions during the test, and a human-led review process for disputed scores in compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

Education stakeholders have underscored the urgency of the issue, emphasizing that unaddressed technical errors could unfairly impact the academic trajectories and university admissions of thousands of students. WAEC has been warned that failure to establish a transparent review mechanism or preserve relevant server records within the 14-day window will result in formal court proceedings.
