Yoruba Nation Activist Sunday Igboho Cleared to Return Home After Royal Intervention

Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been cleared to return to Nigeria after prominent monarchs intervened with President Bola Tinubu to have his name removed from the wanted list.

This was disclosed in a Sunday statement by Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, who stated that all arrangements for his principal’s return are now finalised.

According to Koiki, traditional rulers including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, successfully persuaded the President.

“This is a moment of joy for Ibadanland and Yorubaland as a whole. Chief Adeyemo is now cleared to return to Nigeria and is no longer being sought by government authorities,” Koiki said.

Igboho fled Nigeria in July 2021 after a raid on his Ibadan home by security operatives, during which three aides were killed and 13 others arrested. He was later detained in Benin Republic for over a year before his release in March 2022.

Under the previous administration, Igboho was declared wanted, had his accounts frozen, and was denied a passport despite court rulings in his favour.

Last year, during a visit to the Olugbon’s palace, Igboho had appealed to the Tinubu administration to clear his name, expressing frustration over his exile.

The clearance followed a recent visit by the Olubadan to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Koiki added that Igboho is expected back in the country imminently and will be fully reintegrated. He also conveyed the activist’s gratitude to President Tinubu, the South-West monarchs, and supporters worldwide.
