35 Military Officers Detained Over Alleged Coup Plot, Sources Dispute Official Count
At least 35 Nigerian military officers are currently detained over an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu, according to military sources, contradicting an official statement that acknowledged only 16 arrests.
The Defence Headquarters said Monday that 16 officers were arrested and would face military judicial panels for acts of indiscipline and breaches of regulations, including “allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.” However, top sources informed SaharaReporters that the actual number is 35, including 33 officers from northern Nigeria, one from Osun State, and a senior Air Force officer from Bayelsa State. A paramilitary operative is also reportedly detained.
The detained personnel span multiple ranks and services, including a Brigadier General, Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels, a Navy Lieutenant Commander, Air Force Squadron Leaders, Majors, Captains, and a Lieutenant, alongside 10 non-commissioned officers.
“The Defence Headquarters keeps deceiving Nigerians,” one source stated, alleging the authorities were “hiding something.” The source further claimed some officers were “forced to admit to the crime under duress” and that some were recalled from overseas training courses for arrest.
This publication had previously reported in October 2025 on the initial arrests. Recent reports indicate at least five detainees have fallen ill in custody, with families raising alarms over inhumane conditions, lack of legal access, and unexplained transfers between detention facilities.
The case has extended beyond the military, with operatives previously raiding the Abuja home of former Minister Timipre Sylva, who denied any involvement and called the action politically motivated.
Attempts to reach the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, for comment on the discrepancy were unsuccessful.
