Youths Protest in Bwari, Demand Removal of DPO After Alleged Police Violence
Youths in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) staged a protest on Monday, demanding the immediate removal and prosecution of the local Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Babayola Muhammad Musa. The demonstration was sparked by allegations of police violence during New Year’s Eve celebrations, which reportedly left one man blind.
The protesters accuse DPO Musa of personally opening fire on residents and firing a tear gas canister that struck Abraham Emmanuel in the eye. According to reports, Emmanuel suffered severe injuries, underwent surgery, and ultimately lost his eye.
Carrying placards with slogans such as “Justice for Abraham” and “DPO Musa Must Go,” the crowd called for accountability and an end to police brutality in the area. The protest follows earlier reports that over 150 youths were arrested on December 31, 2025, during New Year celebrations.
Another individual, identified as Tasiru, was allegedly hit by live ammunition and required hospital treatment before traveling to his home state for further care.
Protesters also accused the DPO of collecting unauthorized bail payments from those arrested, claiming to possess bank transfer receipts as evidence. They expressed concern that police authorities may attempt to exonerate the DPO in an ongoing investigation.
The youths have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met, including justice for the victims and the removal of DPO Musa from his post. The FCT Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations.
