EFCC Arraigns UNIBEN Staff Over Alleged N3.2 Million Salary Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a staff member of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Segun Bode Adedeji, before an Edo State High Court over allegations of salary fraud amounting to N3.285 million.

Adedeji was brought before Justice E. G. Adekanmbi on a four-count charge bordering on fraudulent practices.

According to the anti-graft agency, the case stemmed from intelligence that revealed Adedeji was allegedly receiving salaries simultaneously from the University of Benin and the National Orthopedic Hospital, Benin City, while being employed by both institutions.

The EFCC claimed that the defendant unlawfully drew salaries from both public establishments at the same time, causing financial losses to the government. Investigators reportedly uncovered evidence that the total sum involved in the alleged double salary payments was N3,285,396.

The charges were formally filed before the Edo State High Court, where the defendant was arraigned. Details of his plea and any bail ruling were not immediately available.

The EFCC stated that the prosecution is part of its ongoing efforts to curb fraud and financial crimes within public institutions. The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.
