EKITI STATE GOVERNMENT SACKS SURGEON OVER KIDNEY REMOVAL SCANDAL

The Ekiti State Government has dismissed with immediate effect the surgeon involved in the botched surgery of a teacher, Joshua Afolayan, who had both kidneys removed at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

The government approved the recommendations of a seven-member Panel of Enquiry chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, which investigated the matter. The decision was announced in a statement by the Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani.

In addition to the surgeon’s dismissal, all members of the surgical team present in the theatre on the day of the operation will be suspended from duty for one month, pending further administrative review.

The government has also pledged to bear the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and will cover his post-transplant care and transplant-related medical maintenance for two years.

The statement added that a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be undertaken to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.

Ekiti State Government said it remains committed to protecting patients, upholding professional standards in healthcare delivery, and restoring public confidence in the state’s health system.

The government acknowledged the dedication of EKSUTH’s hardworking health professionals but emphasized that it will take decisive action where professional standards are breached.

The statement concluded by thanking Ekiti people for their patience and trust, reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality healthcare, compassion, and responsible governance.
