Ekiti State Praised for Peaceful Local Government Elections Amid Calls for Improved Processes

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji

Ekiti State emerged as a shining example of peaceful democratic processes during its recent Local Government elections, earning commendation from the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NIHRCO) for its remarkable display of orderliness and commitment to fair electoral practices.
The election, which saw the election of 38 Chairmen and 177 councilors on Saturday, was observed by a coalition of 135 civil society and community-based groups under NIHRCO’s watchful eye. The outcome was lauded as a testament to the state’s leadership quality and dedication to fostering democratic values.
According to NIHRCO officials Fred Ojinika and Taiwo Adeleye, the election was notably devoid of violence, rigging, or undue influence, portraying the genuine expression of the voters’ will.
The coalition’s statement highlighted the significance of local government administration in bolstering democracy and urged other states yet to conduct similar elections to follow suit.
While acknowledging the election’s success, the NIHRCO emphasized the importance of addressing existing challenges and implementing improvements for future electoral processes. Among these recommendations were calls for more polling units in Ekiti due to the growing population and unaccounted-for settlements.
The NIHRCO also urged federal support for State Electoral Commissions, akin to the assistance provided to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing the need for special intervention funds to enhance the democratic obligations of these bodies.
Furthermore, the group proposed the adoption of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) in local elections, advocating for its efficacy in broadening participation and ensuring real-time transmission of results, a move that would elevate local government elections to a higher standard.
The coalition commended the proactive efforts of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who championed a non-violence campaign across the state in the lead-up to the elections. They emphasized the pivotal role of state actors in promoting peaceful conduct for sustainable development.
The NIHRCO underscored the importance of local government elections, asserting that their success contributes significantly to the credibility of national-level elections and democratic representation.
In conclusion, the NIHRCO reiterated the need for sustained interest and involvement in local government elections across Nigeria, believing that achieving excellence at this level would pave the way for credible national elections.
