Fayemi Should Quit APC If Unhappy, Says Basiru

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Ajibola Basiru, has called on former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi to resign from the ruling party if he no longer believes in its principles.

Basiru also warned that the APC could take disciplinary action against Fayemi over alleged anti-party activities following his recent criticism of the party.

The APC chieftain accused Fayemi of conspiring with opposition elements to weaken the party ahead of the forthcoming Ekiti governorship election.

Fayemi, a founding member of the APC, had stated in a recent interview that the party was losing its direction and vision. He also lamented the absence of debate and intellectualism within the ruling party and criticised the adoption of consensus as the preferred option during party primaries, arguing that the method contradicts democratic principles.

Responding to those remarks, Basiru said the former governor’s conduct no longer reflected that of a loyal party member. He argued that Fayemi should be courageous enough to formally resign from a party he appears to despise rather than remain while wishing it ill fortune.

Basiru suggested that Fayemi should join another political party where his ideas could be better expressed. He added that if Fayemi does not resign, the APC would not hesitate to invoke disciplinary measures to sanction him for anti-party activities.

The APC National Secretary noted that the timing of Fayemi’s criticism, coming as the party prepares for its governorship primaries in Ekiti State, suggested an attempt to damage the party’s reputation ahead of the election. He maintained that Fayemi should have used internal dispute resolution channels if he had concerns rather than criticising the party publicly.

Basiru also claimed that Fayemi’s remarks confirmed earlier assertions by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi that some APC members were collaborating with opposition forces against the ruling party. He alleged that Fayemi and his followers have been associating with opposition elements ahead of the Ekiti governorship election.

Furthermore, Basiru defended the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, describing Fayemi’s criticism of those policies as either ill-informed or mischievous.
