FIFA Marks 100 Days to 2026 World Cup, Silent on Nigeria’s Complaint Against DR Congo

FIFA officially launched the final 100-day countdown to the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday, building anticipation for the tournament set to kick off on June 11.

In a post on its official X handle, the world football governing body highlighted the scale of the upcoming event, describing it as the “biggest-ever” World Cup. The tournament will feature 48 teams competing in 104 games, running from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The opening match will see Mexico face South Africa, a fixture FIFA referred to as “the opening scene to the greatest show in the world.”

However, amid the celebratory announcements, FIFA provided no update on a pending disciplinary case involving Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The dispute stems from a World Cup qualifying playoff in November 2025, where DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles on penalties to secure a spot in the intercontinental playoffs. In December, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed a formal complaint with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players.

The NFF claims that former England youth internationals Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe appeared for DR Congo in violation of both Congolese laws prohibiting dual citizenship and FIFA’s eligibility regulations.

More than two months later, with DR Congo scheduled to face either Jamaica or New Caledonia in the intercontinental playoffs later this month, FIFA has yet to announce a decision. The governing body previously confirmed the matter was under review but has remained silent since.

The delay has sparked frustration among Nigerian football stakeholders and fans, who are seeking clarity as the World Cup draws closer. Should the complaint be upheld, DR Congo could face disqualification, potentially reinstating Nigeria in the qualification process.
