Fizdale Sets Olympic Gold Target for D’Tigers Ahead of 2028 Los Angeles Games

Newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, David Fizdale, has declared that his target for D’Tigers goes far beyond mere qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, insisting that the team must compete for a medal and ultimately aim for gold.

Fizdale, who takes charge of the Nigerian side amid ongoing efforts to rebuild the programme, has called for a fundamental shift in mentality within the squad. He urged players to adopt the same elite standards and expectations as perennial Olympic champions the United States.

The American coach made it clear that reaching the Olympics alone would not be enough, stressing that the team must set its sights on victory on the global stage.

According to Fizdale, Nigeria cannot afford to settle for short-term goals or celebrate participation alone. He described such a mindset as unacceptable for a nation aspiring to become a basketball powerhouse.

The United States have dominated Olympic basketball for decades, winning 17 gold medals and claiming five consecutive titles from Beijing 2008 through to Paris 2024. Fizdale acknowledged the difficulty of matching that standard but insisted that aiming high remains essential for long-term development.

He expressed confidence that the current pool of players, including several Nigerian-eligible NBA stars expected to commit to the programme, share his ambition and will not be satisfied with simply appearing at the Olympics.

Fizdale takes over a D’Tigers side that has struggled with inconsistency in recent years amid administrative challenges. Nigeria currently sits third in Group C of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, having recorded defeats against Tunisia and Guinea alongside an overtime win over Rwanda.

Despite these difficulties, there is renewed optimism surrounding the programme following reports that several NBA players are open to representing Nigeria under Fizdale’s leadership. The team has appeared at three Olympic Games London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 but is yet to win an Olympic medal in basketball.
