France Reports 1,000 Excess Deaths Following Intense Heatwave

French public health authorities have confirmed approximately 1,000 excess deaths linked to the record-breaking heatwave that gripped much of Western Europe over the past several days.

In a statement released on Sunday, the agency “Public Health France” indicated that these figures represent a sharp increase in mortality compared to standard levels recorded in previous months. The data, which officials noted is preliminary and likely an underestimate, covers the period beginning June 24.

According to the health agency, the impact was most severe in regions previously placed under high-level red alerts. Demographic data shows that 85 percent of the deceased were individuals aged 65 and older. Officials also noted a significant rise in deaths occurring in private residences, particularly within the Île-de-France region, which encompasses Paris and its surrounding suburbs.

Health authorities emphasized that the surge in deaths underscores the vulnerability of isolated elderly citizens during periods of extreme weather, calling for greater community solidarity in highly urbanized areas.

While the intense heat began to subside across France on Sunday, the region had endured several consecutive days of punishing temperatures, with many areas seeing the mercury climb above 40°C. As the heatwave shifts eastward across Europe, neighboring nations have remained on high alert, with health services warning of potential saturation due to the extreme conditions.
