FRIN Leads Oba Hills Restoration Drive with 5,000 Indigenous Tree Seedlings
The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria has intensified efforts to restore the ecological health of Oba Hills National Park in Osun State with the donation of 5,000 indigenous tree seedlings for a large-scale habitat recovery programme.
The intervention marks the first phase of an 11,000-seedling restoration initiative designed to tackle environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and increasing human pressure on the protected area.
The programme, inaugurated at the park on Wednesday, brings together government agencies, conservation organisations, private-sector partners and local communities in a coordinated effort to revive the park’s ecosystem.
Speaking during the launch, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of FRIN, Prof. Zacharia Yaduma, who represented the Minister of Environment, said restoring degraded landscapes requires more than tree planting. He noted that successful ecological recovery depends on the use of indigenous species, natural regeneration and sustained habitat management.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, particularly communities surrounding the park, to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the long-term success of conservation efforts.
The Acting Conservator of Parks, Oba Hills National Park, O.K. Azeez, said the reserve had experienced significant habitat degradation over the years, making restoration a priority. He described partnerships, scientific planning and community participation as critical to achieving lasting environmental recovery.
Also speaking, a representative of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, Adedayo Mumudu, said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. He added that stakeholders would focus not only on planting trees but also on ensuring the seedlings survive and mature.
The first phase of the project includes 5,000 seedlings provided by FRIN, alongside additional contributions secured through conservation and corporate partnerships. Organisers said the restoration programme is expected to improve wildlife habitats, enhance biodiversity, protect natural resources and boost the park’s ability to withstand climate-related pressures.
Community engagement remains central to the initiative, with arrangements being developed to support local farmers while conservation activities continue in priority restoration zones. Stakeholders believe the approach will help reduce pressure on the park and encourage local ownership of environmental protection efforts.
The exercise concluded with symbolic tree planting by participating organisations and recognition of individuals and institutions that have contributed to conservation and environmental sustainability.
Organisers said the success of the programme would be measured not only by the number of trees planted but also by the long-term survival of the seedlings, habitat recovery and improvements in biodiversity across the park.
