House of Representatives Hosts Media Conference on Digital Governance Reporting

The House of Representatives has organized a capacity-building retreat for journalists and parliamentary media aides to enhance legislative reporting on digital governance.

Held on Tuesday at the National Assembly Library Complex in Abuja, the event was conducted by the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs in partnership with Paradigm Initiative Nigeria.

Committee Chairman and House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, stated that the training aims to equip media professionals with the skills needed to accurately interpret and report on complex, technology-driven policy issues before the National Assembly. He highlighted themes such as data protection, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital rights as critical to public understanding and democratic engagement.

The retreat comes amid increased legislative activity on technology-related bills, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act. Rotimi emphasized that as digital legislation grows more technical, continuous professional development for journalists and media aides is essential.

“Your work directly shapes public understanding of Parliament, public confidence in democratic institutions, and the quality of civic engagement in our country,” he stated.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, described the training as timely, noting that journalism now operates within a digital ecosystem. He urged reporters to make parliamentary work understandable and relevant to citizens.

Sessions at the retreat focused on digital rights, legislative interpretation, and practical reporting simulations.
