House of Reps Orders Rescue of Abducted Ekiti Worshippers, Urges Relief for Taraba Attack Victims
The House of Representatives has directed security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing worshippers abducted during a religious service in Ekiti State, while also calling for immediate humanitarian assistance for victims of renewed communal violence in Taraba State.
The resolutions were adopted during plenary on Wednesday, following the consideration of two matters of urgent public importance. Lawmakers said the interventions reflect the House’s commitment to addressing security and welfare challenges facing Nigerians.
The abduction occurred on April 28, 2026, when suspected bandits attacked a Christ Apostolic Church service in a community in Ekiti State. The assailants reportedly killed the presiding pastor and seized 16 worshippers, including several children. Residents stated that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N1 billion, later reducing the amount to N50 million.
More than five children are said to be among those held captive. One community resident broke down in tears while describing the confusion and distress that have gripped the area for 34 days, lamenting the prolonged silence from government and security officials.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Governor has continued his re-election campaign across the state despite the ongoing abduction.
The House condemned the attack and urged the Nigeria Police Force, the military, and the Department of State Services to coordinate operations aimed at securing the immediate release of all victims. Lawmakers also demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
In a separate resolution, the House turned its attention to Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, where renewed clashes between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities have led to deaths, displacement, and widespread destruction of property.
The House called on the National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials without delay. It also urged the North East Development Commission and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to offer shelter, rehabilitation, and other support services to those affected.
Lawmakers stressed the need for swift government intervention to ease the suffering of victims and restore normalcy to the troubled communities.
