Indian Police Arrest Nigerian Woman Over Alleged N40.9m Cocaine Smuggling Operation

A Nigerian woman has been taken into custody by law enforcement authorities in India after she was allegedly caught transporting cocaine valued at about N40.9 million.

The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Joy, was arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, during a security operation conducted ahead of major festive celebrations. Police said officers became suspicious of her movements and stopped her for questioning before carrying out a search.

Authorities claimed the search uncovered more than 57 grammes of cocaine concealed in her possession. The substance was subsequently seized as evidence, with investigators estimating its street value at over 2.9 million Indian rupees.

Preliminary findings suggest the suspect travelled from Mumbai to Indore, where she was allegedly expected to distribute the narcotics. Investigators believe the movement of the substance may be linked to a broader trafficking network operating across different locations in India.

Police disclosed that the woman had entered India earlier in the month on a business visa and was residing in Mumbai prior to her arrest. During interrogation, she allegedly provided information regarding the source of the drugs, although authorities said efforts are ongoing to independently verify her claims.

Following her arrest, criminal charges were filed under India’s anti-narcotics laws, and a court ordered that she remain in custody while investigations continue.

Security agencies have since expanded the probe by examining the suspect’s phone records, travel history and other digital evidence in an effort to identify suppliers, intended buyers and possible accomplices.

Investigators are also seeking to establish the full extent of the alleged drug distribution chain and determine whether additional arrests may follow as the case develops.
