Kaduna Steps Up Flood Readiness Following NiMet Rain Alert
The Kaduna State Government has ramped up public awareness and emergency response measures in anticipation of possible flooding during the 2026 rainy season, following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the government has activated coordinated sensitisation and disaster response efforts to safeguard lives and property.
According to the forecast, rainfall in Kaduna State is expected to begin between May 19 and June 10, 2026, and end between October 5 and October 21, 2026. The prediction also warned of a 21-day dry spell between June and August, which could worsen flooding and related environmental challenges.
Maiyaki noted that the government is treating the forecast with urgency, stressing that early preparedness and public cooperation are crucial to reducing flood impact.
The Ministry of Information and Culture, in partnership with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, has launched a statewide campaign to educate residents on flood prevention and safety measures. Residents have been urged to clear drains and avoid dumping refuse in waterways.
Communities in flood-prone areas have been advised to adopt local control measures such as using sandbags. The government also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, media houses, and civil society groups to support the sensitisation drive.
KADSEMA has begun vulnerability assessments in high-risk communities, strengthened emergency coordination, and pre-positioned rescue materials and personnel.
Flooding remains a recurring challenge in parts of Kaduna State. In 2024 and 2025, heavy rains caused severe flooding in Kaduna metropolis, Kafanchan, Zaria, and other riverine areas, leading to property destruction and displacement of residents.
The development follows a recent call by the National Emergency Management Agency for states to take proactive measures, as predictions indicate that over 30 states may experience serious flooding this rainy season.
