Lagos Intensifies Clean-Up: 26 ‘Omotaku’ Members Jailed, 115 Beggars Arrested

The Lagos State Government has secured three-month prison sentences for 26 members of the notorious ‘Omotaku’ group and arrested 115 street beggars in a sweeping enforcement drive.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the developments on Monday, stating the operations targeted multiple locations to restore public order and reclaim public spaces.

According to the statement, the 26 apprehended ‘Omotaku’ members were arraigned at a Magistrate Court in Oshodi. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were subsequently sentenced.

“This action reinforces the state government’s firm stance against activities that threaten public safety, order, and the effective use of public spaces,” Wahab stated.

The commissioner confirmed that 115 street beggars were also arrested across the state during the ongoing exercises. He assured residents that enforcement efforts would continue to ensure compliance with laws and maintain a safe environment.

This latest crackdown follows a previous week-long operation where 281 street urchins were arrested across key areas including Lekki, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Surulere, and Mainland locations.

Wahab explained that the overarching goal is to keep roads and public spaces clear, reduce risks to motorists and pedestrians, and uphold environmental standards in the state.
