Nasarawa LP Faction Offers Free Nomination Forms to Aspirants
The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP), loyal to the Julius Abure-led faction, has begun distributing expression of interest and nomination forms free of charge to all intending aspirants in the state.
The gesture covers all elective positions, including governor, senator, House of Representatives member, and House of Assembly member.
State LP chairman, Alexander Ombugu, announced the decision on Friday during a press briefing at the party’s secretariat in Lafia. He explained that waiving the fees was aimed at cushioning the effects of economic hardship on aspirants and giving everyone, regardless of their financial status, an opportunity to contest.
Ombugu stated that despite the ongoing leadership dispute between the Abure faction and the camp of former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, his group remains the authentic leadership of the party in the state and is determined to field candidates for the 2027 general election.
He noted that while other political parties sell their forms at high prices, the Labour Party, being a people’s party with the symbol of “Papa, Mama and Pikin,” has chosen to make the forms free.
Ombugu called on credible and upright politicians to pick up the forms and submit them within the time frame set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He further disclosed that the party’s primaries would hold from May 27 to 29, 2026. According to him, the governorship and House of Assembly primaries will take place on May 27, while the Senate and House of Representatives primaries will follow on May 29. He assured that the process would be credible and peaceful.
Regarding the upcoming Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026, Ombugu said the party has fixed May 25 for its primary to elect a candidate for the zone. The by-election became necessary following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
In a related development, a governorship aspirant on the party’s platform, Ibrahim Afaka from Nasarawa Local Government Area, vowed to tackle unemployment and insecurity if given the chance to lead the state. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Nasarawa State of total failure and promised to bring positive change.
Despite the internal crisis dividing the Labour Party at the national level, both factions continue to carry out political activities in preparation for the 2027 elections.
