Nigeria Customs Introduces 90-Day Temporary Vehicle Permit for International Travellers

The Nigeria Customs Service has begun implementing a new policy allowing international travellers to temporarily bring their personal vehicles into the country for up to 90 days.

The initiative, which took effect last Wednesday, is designed to ease cross-border movement for tourism, diplomacy, business, or personal visits. It grants safe passage to non-commercial vehicles in line with international transit conventions and the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.

Under the new framework, eligible travellers must present valid documents—including an international passport, driver’s licence, vehicle registration, insurance, and a Carnet de Passages en Douane—at the port of entry. After verification, Customs will issue a Temporary Vehicle Admission Permit, valid for 90 days and recorded electronically.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, stated that the policy reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to trade facilitation and regional integration, while ensuring security and regulatory oversight.

Vehicles admitted under the scheme may not be sold, leased, modified, or used for commercial purposes. Travellers must present the vehicle and permit upon exit, and report any accident, theft, or breakdown to the nearest Customs office immediately.

The policy comes as recent data shows Nigeria’s passenger car imports rose to over ₦1 trillion in the first nine months of 2025, reflecting improved foreign exchange stability and demand.
