Nigeria’s 2026 Budget Aims to Cement Economic Reforms, Says Minister

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stated that the proposed 2026 budget is a strategic blueprint to solidify the gains of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. He described the current period as a “defining moment” for Nigeria, urging continued perseverance.

In a published opinion piece highlighted on Monday, Idris framed the N58.18 trillion “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” as a critical tool to translate policy gains into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives. The budget, presented to the National Assembly in December, prioritizes defence and security (N5.41tn), infrastructure (N3.56tn), education (N3.52tn), and health (N2.48tn).,

A significant shift announced is the end of Nigeria’s practice of operating multiple, overlapping budgets. The government has vowed to enforce stricter discipline in execution to curb abandoned projects and perpetual rollovers.

Idris acknowledged the difficulties of the past 31 months of reforms but pointed to signs of progress, including easing inflation, growing investor confidence, and stronger external reserves. He outlined key initiatives meant to improve livelihoods, such as the Education Loan Fund, programs to reduce transport costs via CNG, and youth empowerment schemes.

On food security and infrastructure, the minister cited the revitalized Bank of Agriculture, expanded mechanization, and major projects like the Coastal Highway and new rail lines. Addressing security, he noted recent successful rescue operations and ongoing efforts to bolster personnel and equipment.

While recognizing public fatigue, Idris reaffirmed a commitment to transparent communication and called on citizens to remain engaged, protect public assets, and reject misinformation.
