Onitsha North LGC Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures in Main Market

The Onitsha North Local Government Council has commenced the demolition of illegal structures at the Onitsha Main Market, in a move aimed at restoring the area’s original masterplan and improving trading conditions in the commercial hub.

The exercise was announced in a post by Anambra State New Media on Sunday, confirming that enforcement had begun at the market.

“Crackdown: Onitsha North LGA begins demolition of illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market. Occupants were duly notified. The mission is to reclaim the original masterplan and restore order for seamless ‘trade and shop’ activities,” the statement read.

The demolition follows a final notice issued by the council through the Office of the Mayor on February 26, reminding traders and occupants of illegal structures at Parks 1, 2, and 3 of the market that the grace period for compliance had elapsed.

According to the notice signed by the Mayor and Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government, Hon. Anthony Nwora, an initial 14-day ultimatum had been issued to affected occupants, which expired on February 14, 2026. The council noted that the deadline was extended by another 14 days at the request of the traders, with the new expiration date set for February 28, 2026.

“The owners and occupants of all illegal structures located at Park 1, Park 2, and Park 3 of Main Market, Onitsha, are hereby reminded that the 14-day notice of demolition earlier issued expired on 14th February 2026,” the statement said. “Based on their request, it was extended by another 14 days, which expires on 28th February 2026. The Onitsha North Local Government will proceed with the demolition anytime from Sunday, 1st March 2026.”

The council urged affected traders to remove their belongings before the enforcement date to avoid losses.

Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest commercial centres in southeastern Nigeria. Over the years, it has faced challenges of congestion and the proliferation of unapproved structures, prompting the council’s intervention.
