PDP Chair Emphasizes Voter Power Over Party “Strongmen”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has stated that electoral success depends on voters, not solely on influential party figures.

State Chairman Modupe Adetokunbo-Aisida, in an interview in Akure, acknowledged that while the influence of party leaders is an advantage, ultimate power resides with the electorate. This comes amid defections of some PDP governors and members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adetokunbo-Aisida pointed to the 2023 presidential election results in Lagos and Osun states as proof, where political heavyweights lost in their own strongholds. “That is why we should stop building strongmen,” she said. “Whether you’re a governor or not, if you build strong institutions, people will exercise their franchise.”

Regarding the wave of defections, the chairman stated the party has “moved on,” suggesting it allows for a clearer assessment of true popularity in a fair election. She attributed most defections to “selfish interests” and urged voters to recognize their power and reject vote-selling.

On the 2027 presidential election, Adetokunbo-Aisida confirmed the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the south. She added that as a democratic party, all aspirants, including former President Goodluck Jonathan should he run, would be free to contest in primaries.

She also denied any deep divisions within the party, describing current dynamics as the normal expression of varied opinions and interests.
