Pipeline Protection: Niger Delta Community Leaders Urge President Tinubu to Safeguard Vital Jobs and Stability
Traditional rulers and community leaders from the Niger Delta region have issued a passionate plea to President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding jobs and maintaining stability in the oil-rich region. In a weeklong series of stakeholder meetings held in Warri, Ugheli, and other Niger Delta communities, concerns were raised over the potential loss of over 20,000 jobs if the Federal Government reverses its oil pipeline protection initiatives.
The traditional rulers and community leaders expressed their readiness to collaborate with President Tinubu in realizing his mission of transforming the economy while ensuring a stable atmosphere for oil production in the Niger Delta.
The communities called on the Federal Government to take decisive measures to put an end to oil theft, pipeline vandalization, and pollution in the Niger Delta. They stressed the importance of active involvement and support from local communities and professionals to achieve this goal.
Speaking at his Ughelli Palace, The Ovie of Ughelli, Ajuwe Wilson Ojakovo, Oharisi III, stated, “We have never seen such a strategic intervention that has brought peace to the Niger Delta, which is necessary for guaranteed oil production and sustainable development in our recent political and economic history.” He conveyed this sentiment on behalf of several communities in the region.
Pipeline Infrastructure (Ocean Marine Solutions) was commended for its substantial role in reducing oil pollution across the Niger Delta. Traditional rulers and community leaders highlighted the company’s efforts in collaborating with security agencies to identify and halt illegal oil refineries and other illicit activities that harm the region’s ecosystem.
Niger Delta Professionals attending the stakeholder meetings stressed the region’s critical role in maintaining economic stability and oil production for the nation. Dr. Ebiri Edema, speaking on behalf of the group, underlined that a stable Niger Delta is essential for President Tinubu’s economic transformation agenda.
Edema emphasized, “We have the responsibility to guide the President on the right steps to take. We are not politicians; we are professionals. President Tinubu knows that oil is the mainstay of the Nigerian economy and that a stable environment is required for oil production.”
The professionals also noted that more than 20,000 youths directly and indirectly benefit from the activities of Pipeline Infrastructure. They warned that any loss of these jobs could destabilize the Niger Delta, undermining the significant progress made in reducing oil theft and pipeline vandalization.
The groups collectively urged President Bola Tinubu to exercise wisdom in retaining the credible stakeholders responsible for bringing a measure of sanity to oil production in the Niger Delta.
In a related development, the Nigerian military reported significant successes in denying oil thieves billions of Naira and recovering stolen crude oil and petroleum products between June and August 2023. A top military officer identified Pipeline Infrastructure Limited (Ocean Marine Solutions) as a major contributor to these achievements.
The traditional rulers and youth leaders in the Niger Delta stressed that the future of onshore and offshore oil production hinges on the Federal Government’s ability to retain efficient pipeline contractors. These contractors have played a crucial role in increasing oil production by reducing theft, vandalization, and creek terrorism.
Finally, the Niger Delta community leaders expressed their appreciation for the private efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region. They emphasized the need for collaboration with locals who have a deep understanding of the region. Pipeline Infrastructure was singled out for its exceptional commitment, vision, professional expertise, and impressive contributions to oil production security. The leaders believe that President Tinubu’s decision on this matter could leave a lasting legacy of prosperity and stability in the Niger Delta.
