Plateau School Shut Over Structural Safety Concerns
Authorities in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have ordered the immediate closure of Abu Sinan High School in the Sabon Layi community due to serious safety risks posed by the school building’s structural condition.
The directive followed an on-site inspection on Monday led by the Deputy Chairman of the LGA, Sani Garkuwa, who found that the structure did not meet approved building standards.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the LGA Chairman, John Christopher, confirmed the closure, citing visible cracks in beams and walls that compromise the building’s integrity.
“Cracks were observed in the beams and walls, posing a serious safety risk to students,” the statement read. “The fissures indicate compromised structural integrity that could trigger a sudden collapse.”
The statement noted that the damage reflects a pattern seen in recent building failures in Jos, where substandard materials have led to fatal collapses.
“We are directing the school authorities to cease all operations and send the students home,” Christopher stated. “This is to prevent any building collapse that could lead to loss of lives.”
Officials also raised concerns about discrepancies in the school’s identity—the signboard reads “Victory High Science School,” while students’ uniforms bear the name “Abu Sinan High School.” Additionally, the premises were found to lack proper ventilation, adequate doors and windows, and toilet facilities.
The school management has been instructed to shut down immediately and reapply for approval with a valid building plan and necessary certificates. The LGA also warned all school owners in the area to adhere to approved building specifications, noting that further inspections will be conducted.
This closure comes less than a year after a building collapse at Saints Academy College in Jos North in July 2024, which killed at least 22 students and trapped about 120 others.
