Police Launch Nationwide Sensitisation Drive for Complaints Response Unit
The Nigeria Police Force has begun a nationwide awareness campaign to strengthen the implementation of its Complaints Response Unit (CRU) and improve accountability within the service.
Speaking at a sensitisation event for officers of the Nasarawa State Police Command in Lafia, Inspector-General of Police Mr. Tunde Disu stated that the CRU had been reactivated as part of the force’s renewed commitment to result-oriented and people-centred policing.
Mr. Disu, who was represented by the Head of the Complaints Response Unit, Chief Superintendent of Police Anietie Iniedu, explained that the campaign aimed to build the capacity of police personnel and educate them on how to receive, process, and address public complaints regarding police misconduct.
He noted that the CRU, originally established in 2015, had been revitalised to serve as an effective platform for handling complaints against officers involved in unethical practices and acts of misconduct.
The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Shettima Mohammed, urged officers to embrace the initiative as a way to foster better police‑public relations and enhance professionalism in their duties.
He pointed out that the unit would play a key role in exposing and addressing issues such as extortion, illegal collections at checkpoints, demands for money before granting bail, and other forms of unprofessional behaviour.
The Commissioner further stressed that professionalism, integrity, and respect for citizens’ rights were essential for effective policing and public trust
Officials of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) also attended the awareness programme.
