Renowned Contemporary Artist David Hockney Dies at 88

David Hockney, one of the most influential and celebrated figures in contemporary art, has died at the age of 88. The British painter, draftsperson, and pop art pioneer passed away peacefully on Thursday at his home in London, just a month shy of his 89th birthday, his publicist announced.

Hockney’s expansive career spanned seven decades, during which he became globally recognized for his vibrant use of color and his willingness to experiment across various mediums.

Tributes from world leaders and cultural institutions quickly followed the news of his passing. King Charles III expressed his and Queen Camilla’s deep sadness, calling Hockney “a giant of the world of art” whose constant innovation and distinct personal charm would be profoundly missed.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also praised Hockney as one of the nation’s most celebrated figures, noting that his instantly recognizable work influenced generations of creators.

Born in Bradford, northern England, in 1937, Hockney studied at the Bradford School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, quickly rising to prominence as a leading voice of the 1960s pop art movement.

His work famously captured a wide array of subjects, from the sun-drenched, care-free swimming pools of 1960s California to the quiet landscapes of his native Yorkshire. In 2018, his renowned painting *”Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)”* fetched $90.3 million at an auction in New York, briefly setting a record for the highest price paid for a work by a living artist.

Beyond traditional painting and drawing, Hockney was celebrated for embracing modern technology. In his later years, he integrated digital tools into his creative process, frequently producing art on iPads and utilizing custom-built design applications.

His creative drive remained active until his death; London’s Serpentine Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of his recent paintings, and Tate Britain is working with his estate to finalize two upcoming projects scheduled for next year.

Hockney is survived by his long-term partner, Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, as well as his two brothers and extended family.
