Soludo’s Wife Launches Vocational Scheme to Empower 100 Women in Male-Dominated Trades
The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has officially launched the inaugural cohort of the ‘Anambra Skilled Ladies Training Programme,’ a new vocational initiative aimed at equipping women with technical expertise in fields traditionally reserved for men.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Friday at the SSG Conference Hall, Light House, Awka. The programme is spearheaded by Dr. Soludo through her pet project, the “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative,” and is designed to challenge professional stereotypes while fostering economic independence for women.
In her address, the governor’s wife described the initiative as a comprehensive entrepreneurial package intended to provide young women with access to lucrative technical trades. She revealed that the overwhelming response to the call for applications which saw over 10,000 entries in just one week necessitated an expansion of the programme from the initial 50 slots to 100 beneficiaries.
Dr. Soludo explained that the selection process was strictly based on merit and demonstrated passion, urging the successful candidates to fully utilize the opportunity. “This programme holds a special place in our non-governmental efforts to uplift women in a tangible way,” she stated. “As we celebrate womanhood this month, this initiative is my personal contribution to your empowerment and future success.”
The two-month training programme will cover four key technical areas: Solar and CCTV Installation and Repairs, Air Conditioner Repair and Maintenance, Tricycle (Keke) Repair, and Painting.
The curriculum is structured to include one month of intensive practical classes followed by a one-month internship. To ensure effectiveness, trainers will provide close supervision, while an independent monitoring team will track the daily progress of the participants.
Dr. Soludo emphasized the strict conditions of the programme, noting that a 98 percent attendance record is mandatory for certification. Any participant who violates the rules will be disqualified. “This is a platform to excel in fields where men have traditionally dominated,” she told the trainees. “We expect you to bring excellence and become role models for your families and communities.”
She also acknowledged the role of the instructors, urging them to mentor the trainees with patience and professionalism. The governor’s wife concluded by encouraging the women to remain resilient and focused as they embark on the technical training.
