NEMA Receives 148 Nigerian Returnees from Benghazi, Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), received 148 Nigerian returnees from Benghazi, Libya, under the Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Programme. The initiative is facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The returnees arrived on Tuesday, 7th July 2026, at approximately 19:45 hours aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight with registration number 5A-BAE, which landed at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The returnees comprised:

▪︎131 adults (50 males and 81 females)
▪︎8 children (2 males and 6 females)
▪︎9 infants (3 males and 6 females)
▪︎ Medica Issue ( 1 male)

On arrival, officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) carried out biometric registration and documentation to ensure accurate record-keeping and support the reintegration process.

In line with the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe, orderly, and dignified return of its citizens, the returnees received immediate humanitarian assistance, including:

▪︎Provision of food and potable water to meet their immediate needs
▪︎Medical screening and ambulance services for those requiring medical attention
▪︎Luggage handling and logistical support
▪︎Reception coordination, counselling, and other reintegration support services to facilitate a smooth transition back into the community.
