Police Officer Summoned to Abuja Over Viral Extortion Video

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered a police officer, featured in a widely circulated video allegedly extorting money from a motorcyclist, to report to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.

The directive also extends to the officer’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who has been called to answer for possible supervisory failures.

The video, which went viral on Sunday, shows a uniformed officer—believed to be stationed in Cross River State—stopping a motorcyclist and demanding cash. In the footage, the officer is seen counting the money while the rider appears visibly hesitant.

In a statement posted on X by the Police Complaint Response Unit (@PoliceNG_CRU), the Force confirmed the authenticity of the clip and announced that immediate steps have been taken.

“The Force high command has sent for the DPO and officer seen in this viral video to report to the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary actions accordingly,” the statement read, accompanied by the hashtag #NoToImpunity.

This incident surfaces amid persistent public concern over bribery and misconduct within the police force.

The development follows a separate investigation launched by the Ogun State Police Command into another viral video, in which a truck driver claimed he was chased and assaulted by individuals impersonating police officers in Ijebu-Ode.

The driver alleged the attackers, who identified themselves as members of a task force, pursued him around 4 a.m., vandalized his vehicle, and issued threats to his life.

However, in a statement released on Sunday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, clarified that the individuals involved in that incident were not personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
